The big picture

All five academies follow the same arc: a tough first summer that turns civilians into cadets or midshipmen, a first year spent learning to follow, and then three years of growing leadership. Along the way come summer training in the real fleet or force, and a commission (or, at USMMA, a license plus a commission) at graduation. The details differ a lot, and so do the service obligations.

The first summer

Academy Name Length (official) Starts Ends with
USNA Plebe Summer "seven weeks" in the Blue and Gold Book1. Navy photo captions say "six-week"2 Induction Day. Class of 2029: June 26, 20253 Start of the academic year in late August1
West Point Cadet Basic Training ("Beast") "six weeks"4 R-Day. Class of 2030: June 29, 20264 12-mile March Back, then the Acceptance Day parade5
USAFA Basic Cadet Training "six-week" program in two phases: cadet area, then Jacks Valley6 In-processing Day each June7 Acceptance Parade and Honor Code Oath6
USCGA Swab Summer "seven weeks, one of which is aboard America's Tall Ship Eagle"8 Day One. Class of 2029: June 30, 20259 Shoulder board ceremony before classes10
USMMA Indoctrination ("Indoc") "18-day" for the Class of 202911 Class of 2029: July 3, 202511 Honor Oath12. Navy Reserve swearing-in at Parents Weekend13

What to expect everywhere: uniforms and haircuts on day one, drill, fitness, military knowledge to memorize, and an oath. At USAFA, mail is the only way to reach basic cadets, and phones are put away until near the end6. Your appointment packet sets the exact report date. Use it, not last year's.

Fourth-class (first) year

Your job is to follow and learn
West Point plebes serve as "members of the squad"1. USCGA fourth class cadets "serve as followers"2. USAFA four-degrees are "followers and teammates"3.
Duties
For example, West Point plebes call minutes before formations, handle laundry and trash duty, and set mess hall tables4. USCGA fourth class cadets stand duty and perform orderly duties5.
Privileges are the most limited this year
Some published examples:
  • USNA plebes get Saturday town liberty from noon to midnight and one base overnight weekend a semester67.
  • USAFA four-degrees get set monthly passes and can't wear civilian clothes until authorized8.
  • West Point plebes have mandatory evening study while upperclass cadets may go off post9.
  • USCGA and USMMA don't publish year-round privilege rules on their public sites.
Major selection timing differs
  • USNA: end of plebe year10.
  • West Point: before spring break of plebe year4.
  • USAFA: by October of the third semester11.
  • USCGA: apply during third class year12.
  • USMMA: affirm in the second trimester of fourth class year13.
End-of-year milestones
  • USNA's Herndon Monument climb14.
  • USAFA's Recognition & Promotion3.
  • USCGA's Fourth Class Qualification Board5.

Summer training between years

Academy Before 3rd-class (sophomore) year Before 2nd-class (junior) year Before 1st-class (senior) year
USNA Fleet cruise in an enlisted role. The Summer at USNA page describes Yard Patrol craft and sailing instead12 PROTRAMID: aviation, submarines, surface, Marines1 Division-officer-in-training cruise by warfare area1
West Point Cadet Field Training at Camp Buckner3 Leadership detail or advanced schools: CTLT (4 weeks with an Army unit), Airborne, Air Assault45 Cadet Leader Development Training, 4 weeks (about 20% do it a year earlier)6
USAFA Combat Survival Training7 Cadre for BCT and CST, airmanship instructors7 Command roles in BCT, CST, and other summer programs8
USCGA 5–6 weeks of an 11-week summer on EAGLE, then field units9 Swab Summer cadre, coastal sailing, aviation week10 Junior-officer roles on cutters or at Sectors and Air Stations11
USMMA Sea Year: first sailing period of about 130–150 days during third class year12 Second sailing period of about 245–270 days across second and/or first class year12 Back on campus. Coast Guard license exam in the last trimester13

USMMA is the outlier. Its training happens during the academic year, aboard working commercial or military ships, with about one year at sea in total12. At USNA, upperclass midshipmen generally get about three weeks of summer leave1, and so do most upperclass cadets at USAFA14.

Moving up: leadership and privileges

  • Responsibility grows every year. At West Point, yearlings are cadet corporals, cows are cadet sergeants, and firsties are cadet officers1. USAFA follows a similar ladder: third-class cadets in NCO roles, second-class as senior NCOs, and first-class as cadet officers2. At USCGA, "The Corps leads the Corps"3.
  • Privileges grow too. USNA's base overnight weekends per semester rise from 1 to 5, 8, and then 124. At USAFA, second- and first-class cadets don't need passes5.
  • Cars, where documented:
    • USNA: second class may own a car but drive it only off the Yard. First class may drive in Annapolis and on the Yard6.
    • West Point: many cows "own and park a personal vehicle on campus"7.
    • USAFA, USCGA, and USMMA: we found no official car rules.
  • Rings come at the end of junior year or the start of senior year at most academies. Examples: USAFA's Ring Dance during Graduation Week8, USCGA's April ring and Ring Dance9, and West Point's Ring Weekend10.

When the commitment becomes binding

West Point
At the Affirmation Oath, the night before cow (junior) classes begin. Before then, cadets "may leave... without incurring a service obligation"1.
USAFA
At the start of second-class year. Cadets who leave after the first day of fall classes owe 2 years of active duty as second-class cadets and 3 as first-class cadets2. This is marked by the Commitment Dinner3.
USMMA
Midshipmen who have started second class year or later and fail to complete the program may be ordered to up to 3 years of Navy active duty4.
USNA and USCGA
We didn't find this point stated on the official pages we reviewed. Ask the academy.

Service selection in senior year

Academy How it works When
USNA Up to six preferences across 22 Navy and Marine Corps career fields, matched to Navy requirements, aptitude, and preference1 Preferences in late August. Assignments in November (Class of 2026). Ship Selection in winter for future surface officers1
West Point Talent-Based Branching Model2 Branch Night in November or December. Post Night midway through the final semester3
USAFA Top 3 rated and top 3 non-rated jobs (AFSCs)4 "Job Drop" sometime between September and December4
