U.S. News & World Report

Best Colleges, 2027 edition

USNA, West Point and USAFA are ranked among National Liberal Arts Colleges. USCGA and USMMA are ranked among Regional Colleges North. A rank only compares a school with the others on its own list, so “#1 in Regional Colleges North” and “#3 in National Liberal Arts Colleges” can’t be compared with each other.

Checked on each academy’s usnews.com ranking page on Oct 18, 2026. Top Public Schools compares public schools in the same category, and the engineering list covers schools where a doctorate isn’t offered. (tie) means more than one school shares that rank.

USNA engineering: USNA’s June 2026 Induction Day release cites #5, from an earlier U.S. News edition (it came out before the 2027 edition was released on Sep 22, 2026). The 2027 edition ranks USNA #4 (tie), as shown above.

How to use rankings

All five academies are strong schools built for different callings. A rank won’t tell you whether you’d rather be at sea, in the air, in space, on land or in the maritime industry, and that question matters far more than a few spots on a list.

Use rankings as one input. Visit if you can, attend a summer program, talk with current midshipmen and cadets, and read each academy’s own pages. No ranking affects who gets an appointment.

Not included: Niche (not verified on the publisher’s page), Forbes profile-page ranks (they date from 2021), and any list we couldn’t open on the publisher’s own site.
