What this year is like
The summer before second class year is PROTRAMID, a look at naval aviation, submarines, surface ships and the Marine Corps. During the year, second class midshipmen may keep a car, driven only beyond Academy grounds.
Key milestones and events
- PROTRAMID
- 8 overnight weekends a semester
- Car allowed off the Yard
These milestones are described, with sources, in the sections on this page.
Academics and training
- Summer training before second class year
- PROTRAMID (Professional Training of Midshipmen) introduces the major Navy branches and the Marine Corps: flying in Navy aircraft, diving in a nuclear-powered submarine, driving Navy ships, and Marine Corps combat training1. The Summer at USNA page also describes a four-week second class cruise as part of a ship's crew2.
Privileges
Service commitment
When it becomes binding: We didn't find this point stated on the official pages we reviewed. Ask the academy.
Leave (all years)
Midshipmen are generally granted leave for Thanksgiving, end of fall semester, spring mid-term, a short liberty period before Commissioning Week, and three weeks of summer vacation14. Liberty depends on duty, performance, and seniority, and USNA notes schedules "are subject to change with little prior notice"45. Optional summer school replaces summer leave2.
